Dengie Alfa-Beet for Aiding Hydration in Horses

Content by Katie Evans – Dengie Feed Advisor

Hot and dry weather can increase the risk of dehydration; travelling and competing can also add to the issue and so extra precautions should be taken at these times to ensure horses are kept hydrated. Dehydration not only affects your horse’s performance and recovery, but it can also have serious implications for their health.

It is important to always have fresh clean water available to your horse, but some horses can be reluctant to drink while they are stabled or away from home. If you can’t take your own water with you try flavouring your water at home and using the same flavour when you are away so your horse doesn’t notice the difference. Using a soaked feed is a great way to increase water intake too. Products such as Dengie Alfa-Beet can easily be soaked to a sloppy mash as a more tempting way to aid hydration.

Dengie Alfa-Beet is high in fibre but low in sugar and starch. The combination of alfalfa and unmolassed sugar beet pulp provides slow release energy in the form of highly digestible fibre. Alfa-Beet is easy to use as it soaks to a mash much more quickly than conventional sugar beet pulps.

Being high in fibre, Alfa-Beet will also help to increase the size of the fluid reservoir in the horse’s hind gut to help reduce the risk of dehydration. Alfa-Beet can also be used to add electrolytes to the diet as well as masking their often unpalatable taste.

Top tips for preventing dehydration:

  • Ensure fresh clean water is available at all times.
  • If your horse doesn’t like drinking fresh tap water while in, try filling a bucket from the field tank.
  • Adding cordial or food flavouring to water can help tempt fussy drinkers.
  • Using soaked feeds such as Dengie Alfa-Beet can help aid hydration without the horse having to drink from a water bucket.
  • Adding salt or electrolyte supplements can help replace what is lost through sweating.
  • Ensure your horse is sufficiently warmed up and cooled down before and after exercise.
  • Cold hosing is the most effective way to cool the horse down.
